HOMEWORK

At first John Proctor agrees to confess, as Elizabeth is trying to Persuade him to. And though at first he did not wish to, he reluctantly decides to confess. When asked to sign his name, i believe he fills a rush of guilt, as he realises he would be lying in front of god and everyone else for the sake of his own life. Which still would mean nothing as his sins would overcome his body with regret, and John would have to live the rest of his life feeling regretful and guilty. He then states, "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!'  When he specifically states, 'Because I lie and sign myself to lies.' This shows how important staying truthful to god was to him. And so that is why I believe John Proctor did not confess in the end.
