Introduction paragraph

Whilst the movie Gallipoli, shows many men choosing to go to war because of the adventure involved, it also demonstrates that there are other influences in their decision to go to war and the catastrophic consequences that arise because of this choice.Throughout the movie, we see men such as Archie who go to war, not only for adventure but to show patriotism to his country. The character of Frank shows other motives in going to war, including the idea of peer pressure and in his case being called a coward. This movie then goes on to explore how these men’s choices impact their lives significantly as they are faced with death and trauma.

suicide in the trenches

Throughout the poem, Suicide in the trenches, Sassoon effectivley brings through the message of how terrible war really was. We see this through numerous parts of his poem, an example is in the first stanza when he calls the soldier a boy. This shows that he believed that many of the men were too young at the time and that war  was not the place for them.  Sassoon uses rhyming couplets and from reading just the first stanza, people may even assume this was a happy poem- however nothing prepares the reader for stanza 2. These two stanzas create a strong message of just how bad war was- so bad that even one of the happiest people felt the need to kill their self. Contrast is also used between stanza 1 and 2, to show the difference between war and home, this is when he uses the whistling and lark in the first stanza, and then crumps and lice in the second. Throughout the third stanza he begins judging the crowd, blaming them for sending men to war. I think this poem is very effective as it brings out the message, and is very stark and straight to the point.

jem: 'I guess you don't really understand how much people mean to you, until they are gone. And well, i guess thats how i feel with Mrs Dubose, you see, she was the most horrible person I have ever met. She would do nothing but call my father names and make fun of him, but what I didn't understand was that she did indeed have true courage like Atticus said she did. Everytime i had to read to her, and it felt like a prison, I had never noticed that i was helping her. And that she was strong enough to over come her drug addiction. When Atticus had first told me she had passed, I was filled with so much happiness, but i regret even thinking that now, cause even though i assumed she gave me her flouer to tuant me.. I have come to believe that she actually meant it as a sign of forgiveness, as though she would even consider me a friend. I realised i was not the nicest person to her, and since then I have decided that as I grow up, not once will I ever give up, because not once did Mrs Dubose give up.'

Homework

The first eight chapters of to "Kill a Mockingbird" focus largely on the story of the children trying to make Boo Radley come out. List all of the events in this story including those which show the reader that Boo actually has come out. Now write a section in Atticus’s journal on the night after the fire at Miss Maudie’s house. How would Atticus reflect on the events that have happened? Post to your blog by 8.20 am Friday.

Events:
- When Scout is in the tire and hears Boo Radley laughing from the house.
- When Jem finds his pants are sewn up crooked after going to leave the Radleys house in case of getting found
- When Jem and Scout begin to find treasures in the little hole in the Radley's tree.
- When Jem tells Scout Boo Radley placed her cardigan on her when she wasn't watching.

Atticus's Point Of View:

Tonight seemed to contain a lot of drama and concern throughout the neighbourhood. With Miss Maudie's house a lit, and ours and Miss Stephanie's houses, in danger of also catching fire, I do admit, i felt a bit worried for a while. Though It was my job to continually assure the children no worrying was needed, however this time I decided to send the children away whilst all commotion was occuring, only to hear later that Boo Radley supposably placed a cardigan on Scout when she was cold. I honestly do not believe any of it and I wish Jem and Scout would stop hassling the poor man, from what i can see, they are treating him like a freak. And I won't allow my children to be as rude and heartless as they are acting. Next time I suspect they are up to no good, I will punish them both. But for now, i have better say my prayers after all, we have the lord to thank for our house which remains unharmed.

English Homework - due 5 June

The crucible:
Definition:
A container of metal or refractory material employed for heating substances to high temperatures.
A severe, searching test or trial.
The book title, ‘the crucible’ is highly relevant to the novel, and this is shown through themes such as accusation. A definition that could be associated with ‘the crucible’ would be ‘A severe, searching test or trial.’ Within the theme of accusations, there is evidence of a ‘test’ or ‘trial’ and this both impacts the victims, being those who were accused, and also those who blame the people of Salem. Those who are accused have to face the test of loyalty, wether they stay faithful to god, or save their own life. Then there is also those who accuse , and they are given a test of wether to show human values such as love and forgiveness, or wether they will indeed go against these in order to receive some type of acknowledgement or reward. The title is closely related to the story as we see numerous tests in which people in the play are presented which, and from the paths they choose, the story line arises.

What was the connections?

The play 'The Crucible' written by Arthur Miller, was most probably based on the happenings throughout the McCarthy era. There is evidence of clear connections and this includes the black listing of many famous writers and film makers due to belief they may have been working for the communist party, and therefor trying to portray messages through their media and written literature. This is similar to the play, in which many were accused of 'witchcraft' and trying to bewitch members of the Salem community. Arthur Miller, throughout his play, tries to get the message across about how innocent peoples lives were being affected due to wrong accusations, and this is shown in real life where members of the HUAC blame innocent people. In some sense, the girls throughout the play may have even been represented as the HUAC as both groups show no mercy in wrongly accusing those who may have intact been innocent. He may also have gotten some of his ideas of witchcraft, from previous historic events that had occurred throughout Salem.

Is John Proctor A Hero

I believe a hero is someone who at least once in their life does something courages and is noble. And for this reason I think that John Proctor is a hero. Some may argue that he was unfaithful to his wife, however nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. John realises this and feels guilty about his actions. He then shows courage by telling the court how he had been unfaithful, in hope to prove that Abigail's accusations were incorrect. Though this may seem petty, it takes a lot of courage to announce ones wrong doing to a court of people he knew. He also shows courage when he refuses to confess. Though he had the option to, and did considerate for some while, he finally decided he would rather take his life than be blamed for a crime he did not commit. One can not really explore in depth John Proctors motives, however the idea that he did not confess to save the rest of his community was a possibility. Either way though John Proctor may have been somewhat unfaithful to his wife at some point, he had learnt from his mistakes and matured over time, to become a hero who used courage to try save those wrongly accused, and gave his own life, firstly so he was not unfaithful to god, and finally cause it would save those still living in the community.

HOMEWORK

At first John Proctor agrees to confess, as Elizabeth is trying to Persuade him to. And though at first he did not wish to, he reluctantly decides to confess. When asked to sign his name, i believe he fills a rush of guilt, as he realises he would be lying in front of god and everyone else for the sake of his own life. Which still would mean nothing as his sins would overcome his body with regret, and John would have to live the rest of his life feeling regretful and guilty. He then states, "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!'  When he specifically states, 'Because I lie and sign myself to lies.' This shows how important staying truthful to god was to him. And so that is why I believe John Proctor did not confess in the end.

Elizabeths Response:

Danforth! In no way am I or my husband related to the devil! We do nothing of the sort! We are good people your honour! And we have been wrongly accused by Abigail Williams. We are being framed! What are we to do? We tell the honest truth and don't confess, yet we are hanged! Or we lie and confess to witchcraft, where we go against the word of god, yet we live!  This is a lie, your honour. A lie!

Homework Task- Week 4

When Mr Hale is introduced we see that he is some what relieved about the whole situation, and though that may sound suspicious it is later said that ‘he had himself encountered a witch in his parish not long before’ Since then Mr Hale had been studying ‘the invisible world’. So therefor it is understandable that Mr Hale may have been relieved as he knew that he was in fact not imagining things. From this introduction it also gives an idea into the authors thoughts on witchcraft, ‘Since 1692 a great but super-ficial change has wiped out God’s beard and the Devil’s horns, but the world is still gripped between two diametrically opposed absolutes. The concept of unity, in which positive and negative are attributes of the same force, in which good and evil are relative, ever-changing, and always joined to the same phenom-enon - such a concept is still reserved to the physical sciences and to the few who have grasped the history of ideas.’ From this it shows that Miller, though he may not entirely believe in witchcraft itself, he still believes in the idea that there are an equal amount of good and evil ‘spirits’ in the world. Miller also talks passionately about the devil and towards the end of the passage states that, ‘evil were early linked, and so they continued to be in Salem, and are today.’ This is the basis of the story as anyone linked with the devil is considered to be a ‘witch’ and so we can see that the author has used his belief in the devil as the basis of the story.

English Homework- Due 2/4/2012

In the play ‘The Crucible’  throughout the first act i have a negative attitude towards the character, ‘Abigail.’ Abigail starts off throughout the scene talking to Josh Proctor about their little ‘affair’ they may have been happening. Josh tried denying there were anytime of relationship and this can be seen when he says, ‘Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for you more.’ Abby then shows hatred towards this comment and so decides to talk about his wife negatively when she says, ‘She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a -’  From this, i believe that she is looking to pin the blame on others by making rude remarks and she also seems a bit snobby, trying to convince john that he likes her.
I think that Josh Proctor comes out more positively in this first scene, as though even though he did have an affair with Abbey, and though he may feel lust towards her, he tells her that he no longer wishes to have an affair and when she refuses to listen to him, he calmly tells her that she did not mean anything to him, and enforces this when he calls her ‘a child.’ And though he may have admitted he did feel some type of lust for her, he tells her it is over. I think that Josh comes around as a more confident character, but not too cocky however. He has the opportunity to have an affair with Abby, who he has somewhat feelings for, however though he wasn’t always, he stays loyal to his wife in this certain time.
